Abstract:

In this presentation, we will take a trip down memory lane exploring the foundations of parallel logic programming. We will explore the basic models of parallelism and review how such principles and research has flown into existing systems. We will also review most recent efforts that have been presented - especially in the context of parallel execution of Answer Set Programming. We will close the presentation with a brief discussion of open challenges and opportunities.

Biography:

Enrico Pontelli completed his doctoral degree at New Mexico State University, working on theoretical and practical aspects of parallel logic programming. He joined the faculty at NMSU in 1997 and raised through the ranks, ultimately receiving the title of Regents Professor in 2014. He served for 5 years as Academic Head of the Computer Science department. He is currently serving as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. He is the founding director of the Knowledge representation, Logic and Advance Programming laboratory and of the iCREDITS Center of Excellence in Smartgrid Technologies. He serves in the leadership team of the CAHSI INCLUDES Alliance for the advancement of Hispanic students in computing. He is also the director of the Young Women in Computing program. His current research interests include knowledge representation and reasoning, logic and constraint programming, assistive technologies, bioinformatics, computer science education and broadening participation in computing.
